About Matt Bohorquez
Helping athletes improve their skills, understand the game, and become confident problem-solvers under pressure.

The short story
Matt Bohorquez is a volleyball coach based in Northern California with experience coaching athletes from the beginner level through highly competitive club volleyball. He currently coaches JV volleyball at St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School.
As a player, Matt was a three-time All-League selection at St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School, helping lead his team to multiple league championships and two NCS Division III titles. He continued his career at Santa Barbara City College, where he served as team captain and remains among the program’s all-time leaders in digs. He later trained as a practice player with the women’s programs at UC Santa Barbara and Westmont College.
His coaching experience includes boys’ and girls’ club volleyball across multiple age groups as both a head coach and assistant coach. His teams emphasize skill development, decision-making, teamwork, and competitive growth.
Matt believes volleyball is more than learning techniques. It is learning how to solve problems, communicate effectively, and perform under pressure—skills that matter both on and off the court.
What coaching is for
“I coach volleyball to develop great volleyball players—and stronger people.”
I believe competitive sports give young athletes opportunities that are increasingly difficult to replicate elsewhere: fighting for something they want, committing to improvement over long periods of time, performing under pressure, winning and losing with other people, taking care of their bodies, and learning to work as part of a team.
My goal isn’t to create athletes who need a coach to push them forever.
My goal is to develop athletes who learn to push themselves.
Seek difficult opportunities and learn to perform under pressure.
Learn that meaningful improvement takes sustained work.
Build friendships, communicate, and become a great teammate.
Learn to train, recover, stay active, and manage your own development.
Pursue becoming an exceptional volleyball player.
How I coach
My philosophy centers on mindful repetition, game-like learning environments, and teaching athletes to read and understand the game at a deeper level. I want players to be challenged, supported, and empowered to take ownership of their development.
Outside the gym, I study skill acquisition, leadership, and athlete development so the work keeps evolving alongside the players.
